Čhavorenge to commemorate victims of the Romani holocaust - August 2013

Hodonín u Kunštátu – 18th August 2013

Based on an imperial order, the so called „gypsy camps“ used for the forced gradual concentration of Moravian and Bohemian Roma were opened outside the cities of Hodonín u Kunštátu and Lety u Písku on 2nd August 1942. The first transports to the Auschwitz concentration camp set out in March 1943, where nearly all the originál Czech and Moravian Roma were wiped out. And it is here, the place where the concentration camp at Hodonín u Kunštátu used to stand, that an annual memorial ceremony to commemorate the Romani holocaust victims is held. The Museum of Romani Culture in Brno has been taking care of the memorial and the whole event itself since 1997. This is a unique opportunity for the children from the choir to think about past events which have influenced and to this day, even if only symbolically, still influence lives of the Roma living in the Czech society. The presence of a Roma choir at this memorial ceremony is also an opportunity for everyone involved to give some thought to whether the roots that nourished the Roma and Jewish holocaust might still be a dangerous part of our society.

In this way they can become positive role models which is very important for development and integration of Roma community.

Out of artistic workshops the children will participate also language lessons and speeches with chosen topics with regard to their every day reality.

Museum of Romani Culture – 18th May 2013

This year, the Museum of Romani Culture decided to think about the future and included a concert performance by the Čhavorenge children’s choir and Ida Kelarová into its programme. It is here, among the Roma children in Čhavorenge, that we see a new generation emerging – a generation that needs to be motivated to learn and grow. It has taken only two years’ of intensive work to produce impressive results. The choir is able to represent Romani culture on a high level and enable people experience the feelings of the Roma hidden in traditional and contemporary songs. The opportunity to perform in the Museum of Romani Culture for a Roma and non-Roma audience is another motivating factor influencing further work not only for Ida Kelarová’s artistic team, but also for the children themselves.
